DIY Ram Upgrade And Save Money!
Out of the box, the Macbook was suprisingly fast with only 512 ram. However, as soon as I started working with multiple applications including heavyweights like Photoshop, etc., I knew I definitely needed to max out the ram.
If you are used to taking your computer to a professional for any upgrades or problems, you may be a bit wary of trying something yourself that involves “opening up the machine”. It seems frightening the first time you ever do it. Fortunately, I have quite a bit of experience switching hardware in my old desktop PC, so the fear has subsided. However, I had never tinkered with my laptop and I have to admit that removing hardware from my brand new (still got the fresh computer smell) Macbook was a little intimidating. Thankfully, after just a few minutes of search time, I found ample help on easily upgrading the ram and also found great info on which ram to use and how to save a little pocket money to go towards purchasing more Mac accessories.
At the time of writing this, upgrading to 2GB of ram from Apple was over double:
Now that you know you can max out the ram in your macbook with a pretty fair cost if you shop around, you may be wondering how difficult it is to install the new ram yourself. Well, trust me, if I can do it, you can, and there are a few great links to help you out.
If you would prefer to watch a video, MacWorld has a great video posted on YouTube showing you how to do it, as well as displaying the ease of remvoing the hard drive.
My macbook is blazing now!

Unfortunately, Apple gets away with highway robbery concerning new Apple hardware customers and their ram upgrades. Always, always, always purchase your hardware configuration with the lowest ram specs possible and shop elsewhere. That’s the one tip I always pass out to potential customers. Newegg is definitely one of the best places to check out for ram. One more tip to add to the pool is to check ram prices near daily - prices fluctuate a few dollars (couple that with the random “instant savings” that offered by some online venues).
Hey Derek, thanks for the extra tip. The difference in prices are outstanding, and if I can save a few more dollars anywhere, I’ll take it! Unfortunately, I’ll most likely spend it on an overpriced coffee.
