The matte finish on a fresh new macbook is very stylish! Greasy, smeared up matte finish? Not so stylish. At first, I even blamed myself. Maybe I needed to wash my hands more or refrain from forcing my love on my notebook and pressing so hard when I touch? I was disappointed in myself until I found evidence of others just like me with the same issue. Yes, it’s true that some of us have sweaty palms, but the situation is out of control.

I didn’t just stare at it and complain like I do when my Visa bill arrives. I researched the best and safest cleaner, and found iKlear Apple Polish. After a quick trip to the local Apple Store, I had the solution opened and ready to renew my new macbook back to it’s immaculate state. The iKlear package I bought comes with a spray, a micro-chamois polishing cloth (that can be used on both the finish and on the display), and a few convenient travel size options. The result was great! In about 5 minutes I had the macbook looking like new.

Unfortunately, I was worried about my oily mitts, so I had to prepare before I used the mac again.

I vigorously scrubbed my hands and then, using a blow dryer on the highest setting, I made sure my fingertips were dry (and sore). Feeling a bit burnt out (yet refreshed at the same time), I opened the lid and went to work.

Aha! It’s not me! It’s the macbook! It’s toying with me! Frustrated with my failure, I ran out to the porch and screamed into the grey skies, “Do I have to live with a DIRTY BLACK MAC!?” There was no response.

I tried to find a shield of some sort and I did! An invisible one! Well, the name of the product is The Invisible Shield, but it doesn’t come with pieces that cover the entire area of the keyboard (as you can see in the diagrams even thought they call it the Full Body Shield) so you’d have some glossy areas with surrounding black matte finish, and I don’t think that’d look too hot. Although, it seems to look nice on the white macbook.

Ok, I’m borderline obsessive compulsive, but I like to keep everything clean and there’s no real way around this issue unless you clean the macbook daily, so you’ll have to live with a little smudging from time to time. For me, I try and keep everything as fresh and as “like new” for as long as possible, so if you are like me, you can try one or more of the following:

Ha! A hair dryer - what fun to read this. I got to see a black MacBook next to a white one on display at a local hardware store. People can go there to test and touch what they are like. With hundreds of hands touching everyday you get more smear than you can bear. It just looks different on white than on black.

I wonder why Apple choose not to use aluminium.

[...] Well, it’s my time now! I will be a part of 50 Blinks and secure a spot on the miniblinks sidebar! Does that make me a MiniBlinker? If yes, then so be it! I will say it loud and proud! Once I’ve claimed my fame and fortune, I may even print up some T-Shirts that read “My Dirty Black Mac is a MiniBlinker!” and sell them to….well…..I’ll figure that out later, I’m too excited right now!
